Two Legendary Tube Mics - One Remarkable Design
The UT Twin48 faithfully captures the character of two classic tube microphone designs, offering more than just polar pattern selection. Its dual operating modes recreate the distinct approaches used in vintage 47- and 48-style mics to achieve cardioid pickup: each with its own unique tonal signature and slightly different polar pattern. For the first time, both are available in a single microphone.
Dual Modes, Distinct Characters
-
47 Mode — Cardioid / Omni
-
48 Mode — Cardioid / Figure-8
In 47 Cardioid, the rear diaphragm is disengaged (True Cardioid), delivering higher output, greater sensitivity, and a more open, detailed sound with enhanced ambience and top-end clarity.
In 48 Cardioid, the rear diaphragm is polarized to the same voltage as the backplate (Active Cardioid), producing a warmer, more intimate tone with lower sensitivity and a tighter focus.
Versatility for Any Session
Some engineers favor the big, open presence of 47 Cardioid, while others prefer the smooth, close sound of 48 Cardioid. With the UT Twin48, you get both, along with multiple polar patterns, making it a versatile choice for vocals, brass, strings, and more.
Experiment to find the most flattering capture for a singer, add just the right amount of room tone to a horn section, or achieve articulate, transparent string recordings - all with a single mic that holds two legends inside.
